Hard Color by Number for Adults
These are 8 free hard color by number pages for adults with 28 to 30 colors and many small cells, printable on US Letter or A4, each with a full-color answer key.
What is on these pages
Each page has 28 to 30 colors, many of them light and dark shades of the same hue, spread over a few hundred small cells. The subjects are a peacock feather, hot air balloons over a valley, a butterfly with spotted wings, a fruit bowl still life, a harbor village, mountains at dusk, a moonlit lake and the northern lights. Shades are placed in soft patches, so finished pages look painted rather than flat.
How color by number works
Each cell holds a number. Find the number in the legend at the bottom of the page, pick a pencil or marker that matches the swatch name, and fill every cell with that number. Work one color at a time, from light to dark, so you do not smudge the lighter areas. The picture appears slowly as the cells fill in. Each page comes with an answer key in full color, so you can check a cell or see the finished picture before you start.
Tools and pace
Use sharp colored pencils with a good range of shades, or fine-tip markers. Lay out your pencils in legend order before you start, and test each one on the margin, since many colors are close. One color per session is a calm way to work through a page over a week. Cross off each number in the legend when it is done.
Printing tips
Download the PDF in US Letter or A4 and print at 100 percent (actual size), not "fit to page", so the numbers stay crisp. Smooth paper of 90 to 120 gsm (24 to 32 lb) takes colored pencils well. For markers, heavier paper or cardstock stops bleed-through. Keep a spare copy of the line sheet if you want to try a second palette.
