What is in this collection

These pages have no subject to get right. They are made of lines and shapes that divide the page into zones: wavy bands that flow across the sheet, overlapping circles, shards like broken glass, op-art stripes that turn inside circles, wide ribbons that swirl over each other, a broken grid of blocks, rounded organic blobs and smooth contour lines like a topographic map. Some zones hold tangle patterns, most are open for color.

  • Easy: few, large zones and bold lines.
  • Medium: more shapes and a pattern in some zones.
  • Detailed: many narrow bands and small cells for fine tips.

Paper and tools

Colored pencils work on plain printer paper. Markers suit the large flat zones, but use heavier paper, around 32 lb or 120 gsm. On the contour pages, a set of pencils in one color family lets you shade from light to dark, band by band.

Palette ideas

Choose three to five colors before you start and repeat them across the page. Analogous colors, such as teal, blue and violet, look calm. Two complementary colors, such as orange and blue, with white zones left open, look bold.

A slow-coloring tip

Abstract pages have no right order. Start where your eye lands, color one zone, then pick the next one that touches it. Let the page grow outward at its own pace.
